Albany’s public charter schools swept the city’s #1 spots on the state’s 2008 math test and ranked #1 in English language arts for the highest elementary and middle school grades they offer, according to results released today by the New York State Education Department.

All together, Albany charter schools earned seven first-place rankings in math and English.  These top rankings boost the claim of charter advocates that “Albany’s charter schools aren’t just providing a choice, but rather a better choice in public education,” noted Chris Bender, executive director of the Brighter Choice Foundation.

Currently in Albany, charter elementary schools serve students in kindergarten through 4th grade, and charter middle schools serve grades five through seven (and 8th grade starting next school year).

In math, the Brighter Choice Charter School for Boys posted a 97 percent pass rate in 3rd grade, more than 20 points higher than the Albany district average, and a 95 percent pass rate in 4th grade, almost 30 points better than the Albany district average.  The KIPP Tech Valley charter middle school swept the #1 spot in grades five, six, and seven, outpacing the district average pass rate by between 24 and 47 points, and scoring a perfect 100 percent pass rate in 7th grade.

In ELA, the Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls posted a #1 rank in fourth grade, the top grade it serves, with a 75 percent pass rate, 13 points higher than the district average.  In 7th grade, the highest grade served by charter middle schools in Albany, KIPP Tech Valley posted a 91 percent pass rate, 42 points higher than the district average and almost 30 points greater than the district’s highest-scoring school.
